-Seasons and Weather

The beauty of Ha Giang can be enjoyed year round, however if you’re planning on doing the loop a lot of people prefer the dry season; September - November and March - May. September to November is considered peak time to do the Ha Giang loop due to ideal weather, little rainfall, and vibrant cultural festivals and landscape.

Since Ha Giang is located high in the mountains temperatures are much cooler and can vary throughout the year. In the spring (Jan-March) temperatures range from 8°c to 15°c (46°f to 59°f). This is a cold but beautiful time of year to visit Ha Giang to enjoy dry weather, which is ideal for trekking and motorbiking. The early summer months of April and May is considered a spectacular time to visit as the surrounding countryside is green and the rice paddies are being prepared for the growing season. Temperatures during these to months range from 24°c to 29°c (75°f to 77°f). The summer months, June - August, are considered the rainy season. Although rain is frequent, the landscape is lush and green! Temperatures average around 30°c (86°f). The fall months of September and October start to cool down and become less humid with temperatures averaging around 28°c (82°f). During the fall the rice terraces begin to turn gold and offer amazing photography opportunities, as well as improved trekking and riding conditions. Finally; the winter months of November and December. Temperatures range from 15°c to 19°c (59°f to 66°f). The tourist crowds are low during this time and there is very little rainfall. Visibility is high and the landscape is less green, but still beautiful!

-Tips and Necessities

Since you’re up in the mountains you should be prepared for variable weather conditions. Having rain gear or at minimum a poncho is a very good idea. Be sure to have warmer layers available if you’re visiting during the cooler months. If you’re visiting during the summer be sure to use sunscreen and stay hydrated! Because of the intense altitude of the region hydration is key to avoiding symptoms of altitude sickness. Have your passport on you as well as a copy of your visa if possible. If you’re doing the loop it’s advised you look into travel insurance options that cover motorbike riding. All necessary permits will be provided by your tour operator, however if you want to drive the loop yourself an international drivers license with a motorbike endorsement is required to avoid any potential fines from police checkpoints. It’s also not a bad idea to have physical cash money on hand to buy anything you might need or want during your travels. The remote area of Ha Giang might not always accept credit or debit cards. A portable charger and camera is also recommended so you don’t miss out on any of the incredible views!

-Culture and local dishes

Ha Giang offers an incredible opportunity to experience a variety of cultures among the various local ethnic groups and villages. Be sure to be respectful to the local customs and dress modestly, as well as asking permission to take their photos. Greet the locals with a smile and be polite! Knowing some basic Vietnamese phrases can go a long way with the locals as well, but google translate or a simple phrase book is a good idea too!

Regional delicacies include Thang Co, a traditional Hmong soup, and Bahn Cuon, steamed rice rolls. You can also try a variety of grilled meats, fresh spring rolls, and delicious sticky rice! Don’t forget to try the famous ‘happy water’! This popular rice wine is a staple in Ha Giang and is enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike.
